If you didn’t quite find your horrific fix when Sydney rose from the ashes for the Halloween weekend, this twisted cabaret showcase on Friday November 5 might just be what the witch doctor ordered.
Hosted by Sydney’s own self-described “gutsy immigrant-carny scumbag of your wettest and weirdest dreams”, drag king Marlena Dalí, Gemini Rising: Halloween Demons is a cabaret showcase of queer talent of the macabre nature.
According to Dalí, who charmed us as the host of Bloom Festival at the freshly reawoken Darlinghurst Theatre last Halloween, as well as the co-creator of “glamdrodgynous freakshow” The Oyster Club – “A little celebration of death is good healing.”
Taking over the stage at Marrickville’s humble indie venue the Red Rattler, the line-up includes the talents of daring artists like performance and installation artist Mara Maya Devi who works within the confines of the feminine and the monstrous, draglesque siren Mama Medusa, and conceptual drag goddess Sarah Moany. There will also be a handful of first-time performers opening the floodgates of glamour.
You are encouraged to show up in a look to die for, or dressed to kill. There will be a best-dressed contest with prizes.
You can grab your tickets for one of two seated showings at 7pm and 9.30pm here. Both shows will be Auslan interpreted and audio descriptions will be available on request. Tickets are $40 full-priced, $25 for concessions, and free for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
