Here’s where to get ice cream to go in Chicago

We all scream for delivery ice cream!

As the temperature creeps up this week, we've got one thing on our minds: ice cream. You don't have to limit yourself to the half-eaten, frost-covered pint in your freezer, either. Some of the best ice cream shops in Chicago are offering takeout and delivery so that you can get your licks on the go.

Satisfy your sweet tooth with pints and quarts, stacked cones and whimsical popsicles—these Chicago ice cream shops make it easier than ever.

Black Dog Gelato

Goat cheese-flavored ice cream? At Black Dog Gelato, it works—thanks in part to dark caramel swirls and salted cashews. Shop anything-but-ordinary flavors on Uber Eats or stop by the Ukrainian Village shop—just be sure to wear a mask and obey social-distancing etiquette.

The Freeze

Is it really summer in Chicago if you don't stop by this iconic Logan Square shop for a cone of twisted soft-serve? Call ahead for pickup (773-384-5211) or order the savory stuff for delivery via Doordash. Guests are also invited to queue up outside the shop to order on the fly (they've even got markers to keep you 6 feet apart).

Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams

While Jeni's isn't a Chicago-born brand, the fantastical scoop shop has certainly burrowed its way into our hearts and bellies with six locations scattered throughout the city. Stock up on pints of brambleberry crisp and gooey butter cake through delivery apps Uber Eats and Postmates or ship a frozen surprise anywhere in the country with just a few clicks.

La Michoacana Premium-Pilsen

Nothing beats devouring a fruit-filled popsicle in the parking lot of this Pilsen mainstay, but for now, we'll get our licks via pickup (312-226-9600) and delivery. There are dozens of flavors to choose from, but we're quite fond of pistachio and kiwi-strawberry. You can even toss in the shop's famous mangoneadas, bursting with juicy flavor and swirled with spicy chamoy.

Lickity Split

Whether your sweet tooth is craving frozen custard, a decked-out sundae or a blended concrete, Lickity Split's got you covered. The Edgewater location is offering both pickup and delivery (note that the Western Avenue location is temporarily closed)—stop by or find them on Uber Eats or Postmates.

Margie's Candies

Travel back in time when you swing by this Logan Square stalwart for takeout ice cream and handmade candies. The extra-thick shakes and malts are a Day One favorite, but nothing beats a classic hot fudge sundae with all the toppings.

Original Rainbow Cone

This is not a drill: Clear your schedule and order one of the city's most iconic frozen treats from the O.G. Beverly storefront (Navy Pier is still closed for the time being). You can shop pre-packaged pints and quarts or hope that the five-layer cone doesn't melt in transit. Call ahead for takeout (773-238-9833) or schedule delivery via Doordash, Grubhub and Uber Eats

Pretty Cool Ice Cream

We'll let you in on a little secret: Social distancing is a hell of a lot easier when your freezer is stocked with popsicles from Pretty Cool Ice Cream. Owner and pastry genius Dana Salls Cree is offering curbside pickup when you order ahead, and you can choose from flavors like mango lassi, caramel horchata crunch, pink cotton candy and matcha berry.

Scooter's Frozen Custard

This beloved Lakeview custard shop has emerged from its annual hibernation to brighten up your life in lockdown. With helpful social-distancing markers on the sidewalk and a convenient walk-up window, Scooter's is still able to dish out silky custard, loaded concretes and classic sundaes.
