If you’ve ever struggled to find a movie you want to watch on Netflix, you are not alone. The streaming service is home to countless films, but if they’re not on your homepage they may as well be invisible.

Those personalised suggestions can be a lifesaver when you’re after a quick fix. Because, fair play, Netflix, I probably am after a binge-worthy TV drama featuring a strong female lead 💪 . But sometimes Netflix doesn’t know exactly what you want.

It doesn’t know what mood you’re in, what you watched on iPlayer earlier or the fact that you’re super into swashbucklers based on books. Sure, Netflix is your BFF, but your niche TV preferences just haven’t come up yet.

Thankfully, though, there’s a workaround, so you can access all the incredibly niche sub-genres that aren’t appearing on your personalised homepage. This simple web-address trick reveals the strange genre categories you didn’t know existed...

All you need to do is change the number at the end of the URL for access to all kinds of weird and wonderful worlds: https://www.netflix.com/browse/genre/722

Such as deep-sea horror movies (45028), goofy workplace sitcoms (34910), understated British crime (1767), satanic stories (6998), animal tales (5507), violent sci-fi (2040), visually striking emotional dramas (3102), gory dysfunctional family films (39678), westerns based on real life (1250), witty independent movies based on books (4913), cerebral action adventure (4778), underdog movies from the ’80s (26881) and steamy thrillers (972).

Click here and here for extensive genre lists. It’s time to get out of your Netflix comfort zone.

Here’s our pick of the best movies on Netflix, the best movies on Netflix by genre, the best new movies on Netflix and the Netflix TV series we’re really looking forward to
