A favourite complaint of visitors to London is how terribly, disgustingly expensive this city is. And sure, if you’re planning to pick up some bits in Harrods, have a quick bevvy on top of The Shard, then ride home to your Kensington hotel on a neon-lit rickshaw, you’re going to feel pretty short-changed. But we know if you’re savvy enough to read this article, you’re well aware that this city is bursting with free things to do – if you know where to look.
London is full of lavishly funded cultural spaces that delight in bringing free art to the masses, community organisations who love to throw inclusive get-togethers, and big companies who know that giveaways are the way to land new customers. And Time Out is expert in tracking down the very best places to go to get your hands on the goods.
This week, you can become a free cupcake tester, gorge on gratis tacos, join a community history festival, and admire intriguing art without shelling out for a ticket. In short, we’ve got loads to nourish your mind, body and soul – while ensuring your bank balance stays pretty well-fed, too. Read on for your wallet-friendly plans for this weekend.
The best free things on in London this weekend, October 2-4 2026
1. See some stellar autumn art shows
Collecting art is legendarily expensive. But seeing it? Thankfully affordable, because London’s commercial galleries provide a free shop window for anyone who wants to survey the works of the hottest new artists around. The centrepiece of this autumn’s big crop of new openings is the Gagosian’s Magritte exhibition, which’ll give you a chance to revel in the Belgian artist’s uncanny surreal works in the glamorous London HQ of one of the world's greatest gallerists. It’s just round the corner from another swanky Mayfair gallery, Sadie Coles, where you can see a show by Nicole Eisenman that’s packed with unsettling apocalyptic visions.
Alternatively, go to some of London’s most storied art institutions to check out free autumn shows including installations and performances by Autumn Knight at the ICA, films by Amar Kanwar at Serpentine, or explore an eerie maximalist wonderland at Jenkin Van Zyl’s immersive installation for Somerset House.
Various locations. Various times. Free.
2. Time travel in a garden at Chelsea History Festival
With a massive 100 events on its line-up, Chelsea History Festival is an enticing prospect for anyone who’s keen on peering into the past. There are loads of talks from historians, as well as guided walks and special performances – most of which you’ll need to buy a ticket for. But this weekend is a glorious exception, with a free historical jamboree hosted by Chelsea Physic Garden. Not only is this tranquil spot waiving its usual entry fees, it’s also bringing its leafy trails to life with a cast of costumed characters. Wander around to meet apothecaries and herbalists from days gone by, who’ll explain the healing properties of the plants you see. You can also join in on storytelling, craft and pond-dipping activities throughout the day.
Chelsea Physic Garden, 66 Royal Hospital Road, SW3 4HS. Free.
3. Marvel at next-level ceramics at this free fair
Who amongst us hasn’t resorted to pottery at some point, hoping to find spiritual fulfilment or relief from heartbreak in a mud-covered studio? Sadly, for most of us, the creative adventure ends with some strange, misshapen pots that collect dust on the mantelpiece of our loved ones. But for a talented few, it becomes a vocation. Head to Hoxton’s Museum of the Home to see ceramics made by wildly original (and very patient) potters who’ve learnt how to create vases with delicate glazes that ripple like waves, or rustic vessels that look like they've been found in the crater of a volcano. There’s even a Creation Zone, where kids can have their very first go at pummelling the clay, and make pots that'll put many grown-ups to shame.
Museum of the Home, 136 Kingsland Road, E2 8EA. Sat Oct 3-Sun Oct 4. Free.
4. Discover the stories of bohemian Bloomsbury at a cultural festival
This year’s Bloomsbury Festival is the 20th anniversary edition of this teeming cultural extravaganza, which means there are loads of intriguing ways to explore this neighbourhood’s artsy past. Head to Holborn Library to discover unseen memorabilia relating to author EM Forster, listen to stories from locals on a bench on Russell Square Gardens, or explore an immersive oral history project about the history of nursing in Holy Cross Church. There’s even a free theatre workshop on Saturday if you’re inspired to discover your own creative side.
Various locations. Various dates. Free.
5. Score free tacos and cupcakes at giveaways across the city
Having a sweet tooth doesn’t always come cheap in this city – bakeries are always dreaming up delectable treats for us to salivate over, and they often cost as much as an actual healthy meal. But if you’re in search of a novel treat that won’t cost a penny, this pop-up is for you. Lola’s Cupcakes wants your feedback on some of its new baked delights, and all you have to do is turn up to their pop-up with opinions to spare. The first 200 customers each day will get a free bake, plus a QR code so you can play Paul Hollywood and offer your critiques. Even better, you'll get a £5 voucher to spend on more sugary wonders, either instore or online.
Do you prefer your freebies to be a bit more savoury? Well, head to Coyo Taco on Sunday and you’ll get a free beef birria taco in honour of National Taco Day. Show up early and you might also be among the lucky first 20 attendees who get a free themed bib, into the bargain.
Unit 5A, 16-19 Canada Place, Canary Wharf. Thurs Oct 1-Sun Oct 4. Free.
6. Browse some queer treasures at a one-off fair
If you want to find queer community without coughing up for drinks at a bar or club, then this one’s for you. Peckham’s buzzy Copeland Gallery is hosting Queeriosities, which is full of eclectic, highly personal creative works by artists, illustrators and crafters. Browse the free fine art exhibition, check out films by trans collective Trans Tropez, and discover an incredible array of beautiful things that are as individual as their makers.
