London would have come 21st in the Olympics

The city places even higher when you bring team events into the mix

A year later than planned, the Tokyo 2020 Olympics are done and dusted. While the Games might have been a little surreal at times, with the Japanese city in a state of emergency as they took place thanks to the pandemic, they did provide us with some much-needed excitement and uplifting drama.

Team GB might have done the country proud by sweeping 22 gold medals and an overall haul of 65, but athletes from London repped their city well too. If the capital’s stars tallied up their medals – four golds, two silvers and one bronze – they’d rank 21st. That’s above Jamaica, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and 69 other teams. Impressive!

When you add in team events (featuring some equally heroic non-Londoners), that result gets even better. Thanks to seven gold medals, seven silver ones and nine bronze, the city would jump up to 11th, besting the likes of Canada, Brazil, New Zealand and South Korea.

Just some of our Olympian heroes out in Tokyo include Enfield-born equestrians Ben Maher and Charlotte Dujardin, Lewisham triathlete Alex Yee, Leytonstone BMXer Beth Shriever and Hammersmith sailor Dylan Fletcher. Congratulations to all of our brilliant medallists and the 52 athletes from our region who took part in the tournament.

Two Londoners completed every single Olympic event in 46 hours, right here in the capital.

Team GB’s official artist is celebrating the team’s wins with some sprawling art murals.
