Some London pubs are known for their charming, old fashioned interiors. Some are known for their food and drink offering. Others are known for how much they feature on hyper-local London meme pages. When it comes to the Spurstowe Arms, all three are true. Now, London’s trendiest pub, where the uniform is strictly Maison Margiela Tabis (those are the shoes that look like a cow’s hoof, for anyone not in the know), Arc’Teryx jackets and Salomon XT6s, is taking over a second venue. Obviously it’s also in east London.

The Spurstowe has announced it will take over The Elderfield, a pub in Lower Clapton, in December this year. However, it appears that the pub is trying to move away from its reputation of being an intimidating boozer filled with sourdough-munching, pét-nat-chugging Gabriette wannabes. The Spurstowe’s manager Lee Foster told Broadsheet they wanted to respect the local neighbourhood. ‘We don’t want to just barge in and create chaos in the community,’ he said. ‘This is a long-term project, not a smash and grab.’ However they don’t plan to alienate their entire clientele, because pét nats and orange wines will still be on the menu.

According to Broadsheet, The Elderfield’s ethos will be to build on the pub’s pre-existing historic character. The venue will get a small renovation in January, which will include a fresh coat of paint and the removal of modern fixtures to create a more antique feel.

The Elderfield will serve food, but details on who will be in the kitchen are still to be revealed. The Spurstowe’s eats are currently supplied by Dough Hands pizza.

The Elderfield opens in December 2025. On yer Lime bikes, we’ll see you down there.
