Time Out says

Behind it unassuming mid-century facade, the Beverly Laurel offers kitschy charm with bright rooms, warm service and reasonable prices in the heart of L.A.’s trendy Fairfax district to travelers looking for an easy, unfussy stay in one of the city’s most interesting neighborhoods.

The Beverly Laurel Motor Hotel comes off as no-frills—the motel’s external architecture and design are decidedly simple, and its website is, ahem, minimalist—but that doesn’t mean it’s without charm. Located just above the chintzy punk-inspired Swingers diner, where you’ll find industry execs and art school kids noshing on all-day breakfast late into the night, the hotel’s modest rooms are delightfully decked out with silly bespoke details like smiley face throw pillows, retro rotary phones and beachy photography. There are also all the standard modern amenities, like free wifi and comfy bedding, and friendly, efficient service. The Beverly Laurel’s real draw, however, is its location: nestled in the heart of the Fairfax district, the hotel is close to a bevy of cool attractions, from arthouse theaters showing exclusive L.A.-only films to chic design galleries and some of the city’s best thrift stores. Whether you’re looking for authentic ‘90s concert tees or a sleek contemporary small bites restaurant, the neighborhood’s uptown/downtown mix is a crowd pleaser to hip Angelinos of all tastes.

Location: Surrounded by boutiques, buzzy restaurants and galleries, the Fairfax district is an ideal mix of laid-back, quirky small businesses and more upscale attractions. The immediate neighborhood is supremely walkable, and if you’re looking to discover the rest of the city during your visit, Hollywood, Beverly Hills and Museum Row are all a short Uber away.

Nearby:

Los Angeles County Museum of Art: LACMA’s recently renovated exterior means the landmark museum’s facade finally matches the prestige of its interior collections. An astounding permanent collection is rounded out by tea gardens, a movie theater, gift shops and a rotating calendar of events.

Canter’s Deli: One of the only late-night joints around also happens to be one of the best Jewish delis. This historic spot is best known for its matzo balls and black and white cookies, but you can’t go wrong with any item on Canter’s notoriously long menu.

Melrose Trading Post: Every Sunday, Fairfax High’s parking lot turns into a mecca of handmade jewelry, vintage clothing, rare housewares and more. Come early and with cash to make the most of it.

Little Next Door: This Parisian-inspired cafe combines laid-back cafe vibes with classic French dishes. Stop in for a glass of wine and a plate of savory moules frites, and don’t forget to stop at the bakery on your way out.

Good for: The hip neighborhood and modest price point make the Beverly Laurel Motor Hotel perfect for young travelers and vacationers on a budget. Friends, solo travelers and couples looking for a low-key getaway will love the hotel’s chill vibes and high energy ‘hood.

Amenities: Pool, free wifi, concierge

Time Out tip: Take advantage of the aforementioned Swingers diner downstairs; while it isn’t exactly fine dining, Swingers’ convenient location, expansive menu and bright ambiance make it the perfect place to grab a late-night snack or enjoy brunch after a night at the Beverly Laurel.
