An L.A. favorite featuring Tokyo-style pizza tied with a San Francisco icon for a top ten spot.

The pizza experts at 50 Top Pizza—the annual ranking from anonymous inspectors who judge everything from crust precision and wait times to beverage programs—just dropped their list of the best pizzas in the entire world, and three California pizza joints earned coveted spots on the list. Pizzeria Sei in Los Angeles and Tony's Pizza Napoletana tied at number five, while Truly Pizza in Dana Point made the top 50 at number 26.
Pizzeria Sei impressed judges with its precise Tokyo-style pizza. Inspectors highlighted the modern, minimalist space where the oven and countertop take center stage. The highly hydrated dough undergoes prolonged fermentation, producing a light, airy, yet crispy base. Judges praised the technical skill behind balancing quality Italian ingredients with subtle Japanese influences, as well as the expert waitstaff and curated wine pairings that elevate the concept.

Sharing the number five spot, Tony Gemignani's historic North Beach establishment was dubbed an essential global pilgrimage. Built on thirty years of expertise, Tony’s features seven distinct ovens crafting eleven different regional pizza styles. Judges lauded Gemignani's relentless passion and masterclass techniques, noting that despite the fierce precision and high-volume demand, the service remains smooth and the atmosphere retains a warm, family-friendly vibe where every guest feels at home.
Landing at number 26, Truly Pizza in Dana Point delivers an exceptional multi-level, outdoor dining experience framed by citrus trees and a Mediterranean atmosphere. Beyond elegant starters like burrata and the Spagnola salad, the judges raved about the dual menu options featuring both square and round pizzas.
