Jon Walpole: Butterfly

  • Comedy festival

Clown, musical comedy, sketch, character comedy and improvised audience interaction – sounds like a recipe for a zany time, right? That’s exactly what’s on the agenda at Butterfly, the latest show from Melbourne local and RAW Comedy state finalist Jon Walpole.  He’s toured as part of Edinburgh Fringe, studied clowning at France’s famous Ecole Philippe Gaulier and now he’s back home to see what happens when a silly goose tries to make a “deep” comedy show, even when he has “absolutely nothing of value to say” (Walpole’s words, not ours).  If this show is anything like his previous outings at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, you can expect to leave Butterfly with sore abs, tears in your eyes and an appreciation for Walpole’s unique comedic style.  Catch Butterfly at Tasma Terrace from April 8-21. Find out more and snap up tickets before they fly away over here.  After some rib-splitting comedy? Check out who else is performing at the 2024 Melbourne International Comedy Festival.

Josh Cake: Gender is a Scam and I am Winning

  • Comedy festival

Award-winning performer and poet Josh Cake goes by any pronouns, although they have external identities of “brown”, “Australian” and “man”. As far as Cake is concerned, all these labels are scams, but he’s in it for the money and power. This show covers some pretty heavy themes, including the intersections between gender, race and nationality. However, it’s also described as an “uplifting musical comedy”, which sounds pretty weird and wonderful to us (in the best way).  Catch Gender is a Scam and I am Winning at Tasma Terrace from April 8-21, as part of the Melbourne International Comedy Festival. You can find out more or secure some tickets here.  Want more comedy? Check out who else is performing at the 2024 Melbourne International Comedy Festival.
