For when you’re not sure whether you want to head to the club or catch a film, there’s Jeff Mills. The American DJ, producer and composer has been on the turntables since the 1980s and has been dabbling in composing for films since 2000. For Melbourne Music Week ACMI will show a screening of Woman in the Moon, a 1929 silent film, which Mills has composed a soundtrack to.
The film is regarded as being an eerily accurate representation of rockets and space explorations, even though it would be 40 years until the Moon landing. Mills has created a retro-futuristic soundtrack to accompany the surreal science fiction film. The experimental score has a techno edge (a nod to Mills’s career as a DJ) and will be played live by Mills and a debut exclusively for Melbourne Music Week.
