You may or may not remember when Sufjan Stevens made the grand declaration in 2003 that he was going to write an album for every state in the USA, starting with his home state which was represented in the 2003 record Greetings from Michigan. The 'states' project only managed to cover one other state with the epically orchestrated
Stevens is very much a conceptual artist, and his state records were followed up by a collection of biblical songs in Seven Swans and two box sets of Christmas songs. His most current record, 2015's Carrie & Lowell was written with his mother and stepfather as subjects and was released to high critical acclaim. The haunting lo-fi folk and smatterings of electronica encompasses Stevens' best talents and will no doubt be showcased throughout his Australian tour.
