Sydney's best patisserie sets up shop in Melbourne
Update: the Black Star Pastry pop-up will be closing on Friday June 30, 2017. It's been fun (and delicious) while it lasted, but Black Star are set to retreat back to Sydney. They'll be back in town for the Night Noodle Markets in November, and have dropped hints about a permanent shop in Melbourne in the future. To say goodbye to Black Star in style, visit the pop-up on Sunday July 2 for a big goodbye party. They'll be slinging you free skewers from Hoy Pinoy, booze, and of course, cake.
Black Star Pastry, the famous patisserie and bakery behind Sydney's favourite cake has set up shop in Melbourne. The cake shop by pastry chef Christopher Thé has been a hit with Sydneysiders since it opened its first small venue in Newtown in 2009. Today, the home of the famous strawberry and watermelon layer cake has stores in Sydney's CBD and Roseberry, as well as the occasional food festival pop-up.
Now technically, the Black Star Pastry Carlton outpost is only a pop-up shop, but we have a feeling it will eventually find a permanent home in Melbourne. Currently the patisserie is sharing a venue with Carlton's Café Italia on University Street. They have their own kitchen at the shared site, so all products are made onsite. However, the menu is limited to the sweet stuff – while the Sydney original makes pies and sausage rolls, the Melbourne venue is sticking to the big hitters.
This is your chance to see if the strawberry watermelon cake is worth the hype. If you like your cakes light and creamy, you'll love the airy rose-scented cream, feather-light almond dacquoise and crisp watermelon that magically doesn't make everything soggy. But if you're after an amazing tea cake, the orange cake with Persian figs is almost pudding-like with the brushing of orange blossom syrup on the dense orange and almond cake. The Amedel chocolate hazelnut torte is also a must for chocolate fiends.
All cakes can be bought whole if you call ahead, and you can also take home other treats like the custard flan (like a Portugese egg tart, but twice the size), macadamia brownies, or that patisserie classic, the chocolate eclair.
