For anyone who doesn’t dive headfirst into the Christmas spirit the minute Mariah Carey’s ‘All I Want For Christmas Is You’ takes over the globe, we’ve got a festive event that truly sleighs.

Malthouse Theatre’s latest production F Christmas is a wild, mutinous, punk celebration of the holiday, fit for anyone who identifies as a little bit of a Grinch. The experimental play will close out the theatre’s 2024 season after an epic year of stories that explored and challenged concepts of belief, fate and ritual.

Following in the same rebellious spirit, F Christmas questions the true meaning of Christmas as it follows a family of ‘queers, rebels and runaways’ who release themselves from the capitalist machine that the holiday has become.

The play unwraps toxic and out-dated conventions surrounding the holiday, including the naughty and nice binary, the problematic tradition of sitting on Santa’s knee and the overconsumption it promotes. In the spirit of “doing good’” at Christmastime, the play also puts forth an idealised version of what December 25 could look like – but you’ll have to see it to find out.

Created and directed by Susie Dee (Melbourne Fringe’s Bad Boy), F Christmas is also co-created by Sarah Ward, who stars in the show, and Bec Matthews, who doubles as both performer and musical director.

Don’t miss this riotous production that bares it all – bums included – and lands somewhere between a camp Christmas fantasy and a twisted apocalyptic nightmare, closing out Malthouse’s season with a bang.

The show is playing from November 27 to December 15 with tickets ranging from $35 to $69. Get yours here
