Gina Riley leads a starry cast in Melbourne Theatre Company's fresh take on Oscar Wilde's classic comedy
Has there ever been a better time for a comedy about the hypocritical moralising of politicians, whose private lives don't quite measure up to what's going on behind the scenes? (We're not pointing a finger at anybody, Barnaby.)
Oscar Wilde's An Ideal Husband mightn't be quite as well known as The Importance of Being Earnest, but it's every bit as funny and particularly pertinent. At the centre of the play is an upstanding politician, Robert Chiltern (played by Les Misérables star Simon Gleeson), who is blackmailed over past misdeeds by his wife’s former schoolmate (played by Christie Whelan Browne).
Melbourne Theatre Company's associate director Dean Bryant, known for his vibrant and hilarious takes on classic comedies, will be directing a cast that features Kath and Kim star Gina Riley, acting veteran William McInnes, Zindzi Okenyo, Michelle Lim Davidson, Brent Hill, Jem Lai, Joseph Lai, Josh Price and Greta Sherriff.
