If your family has been avoiding a trip to the library because your kid’s late fees have been adding up, then this is going to be welcomed news for you and your little bookworm. The New York Public Library, Brooklyn Public Library and Queens Library are removing all current late fees for cardholders ages 17 and under!

The three public library systems agreed to provide all kids with a new start beginning today, October 19, and hopefully encourage the more than 160,000 youths who’ve been barred from checking out materials to return to their community’s libraries. Approximately $2.25 million in fines have been forgiven thanks in part to a grant from the JPB Foundation. High schoolers who are 18 and older must show up in person by November 2 to have any fines removed from their account.

The library is such an important resource for all ages: they offer countless kids' books for families who might not have money to spend in book stores, they plan wonderful story time events and some even host therapy dogs to help kids improve on their reading skills. Just take note: any materials due from today on will still carry a penalty fee if returned late!
