It’s a startling stat, but true: A new report released by New York City Comptroller’s office reveals that only 57 percent of eighth graders are receiving the mandatory semester of health class in school. In addition, 88 percent of schools that teach middle and high school kids don’t even have a teacher that is licensed for health education!

Surely we can all agree that kids need to have proper sex education and health courses in school? Not only is it important that they understand the bodily changes they’re experiencing, but it also helps parents who might not know how to begin a discussion about the birds and the bees with their kids.

Even if kids feel uncomfortable going to their parents for answers, they’ll get answers by asking teachers anonymously or learn from the questions asked by braver peers. It also promotes open discussions on the topic instead of turning it into a shameful taboo that should be hidden or ignored. The fact that NYC schools are failing on this front puts our kids at a serious disadvantage and risk for misinformation and unsafe sex.
