Governor Cuomo approves outdoor graduation ceremonies for later this month

Governor Andrew Cuomo announced that graduations will be allowed to take place starting June 26.

However, there will be new guidelines in place this year: Ceremonies are required to take place outdoors, follow social distancing guidelines and limit the crowd to 150 people total—that number includes students, staff, family and friends.

This is the latest restriction lifted as New York State begins to reopen. New York City enters Phase 1 today, while parts of New York State enter Phase 2. Now it's up to the NYC DOE and local schools to decide how to implement smaller open-air graduations.

Even if your young graduate takes part in an in-person ceremony, be sure to watch Lizzo play "Pomp and Circumstance" with the New York Philharmonic as her backup band.

If you think this has been the most disruptive year in recent history for NYC Schools, you're right. From canceling the Regents Exam to requiring that 177,000 students enroll in virtual summer school, decisions with seismic impacts are being made with no advance warning.
