Mayor Bill de Blasio’s office announced in a statement on Feb 28 that Alberto M. Carvalho has been named the new New York City schools chancellor, according to The New York Times...but things didn't go quite as planned for the Big Apple.

Carvalho announced on live TV that he would not be accepting the mayor's offer according to amNY, which reportedly came as a surprise to de Blasio. Carvalho revealed his plans to continue serving his Florida district.

The superintendent of the Miami-Dade County Public Schools has received a number of prestigious accolades throughout his career in the Florida school system, which includes increasing the graduation rate in his district to 80.7 percent in 2016-2017 (which had previously been recorded at 60.5 percent in 2007–2008), receiving National Superintendent of the Year award in 2014 and receiving the Broad Prize for Urban Education in 2012, The Times further reports.

Earlier in the week, the NYC mayor had praised Carvalho's accomplishments and felt as though he made an appropriate selection to lead NYC's schools toward success. “Alberto Carvalho is a world-class educator with an unmatched track record of success,” Mayor de Blasio said in a statement, according to The Times. “I am very confident that our extensive, national search has found New York City the best person to lead the nation’s largest school system into the future.”

But this was certainly an "unusual" move.

The current school chancellor, Carmen Fariña, will reportedly leave her position next month, according to The Times. How will things change for NYC's 1.1 million students? Time will tell.
