Families should not expect an answer about NYC schools reopening in September until later this summer. However, Chancellor Richard Carranza is beginning to map out what the 2020-2021 academic term could possibly look like.

In a letter that has circulated amongst principals, superintendents and other important stakeholders, he suggests that September will likely be a mix of online learning and in-person learning, according to Chalkbeat New York. Schools will be expected to comply with city, state and CDC guidelines regarding building capacity, and adjustments will need to be made with scheduling, busing and meals. Additionally, schools will need PPE supplies and could quite possibly conduct temperature checks.

NBC New York reports that the chancellor is working off an eight-piece framework, but nothing will be finalized quite yet. New York State is issuing guidelines for schools and colleges this month so that each institution can prepare for a variety of scenarios. Subsequently, schools will need to submit their plans in July.

According to Governor Cuomo's press briefing on June 10, "Anyone who can tell you today that they know what is going to happen in the fall with COVID, they do not know what they are talking about. You can guess, you can speculate, 'I think,' but nobody knows."

A decision won't be made until the facts are in, per the Governor, but until then you can keep the kids busy with virtual camps and a great summer reading program from the New York Public Library
