Park Slope school's soil contains chemicals, e-mail says

Park Slope parents received a scare from the New York City Department of Education yesterday.

According to Patch, Brooklyn residents who send their children to P.S. 321—and even parents of alumni—were emailed on Feb 28 about high levels of carcinogens that were discovered in the school's soil. However, those chemicals were not named and the site further reports that the message directed its readers to an incorrect outside link.

Time Out New York Kids reached out to the New York City Department of Education and P.S. 321 to learn more about the carcinogens and what is being done to rectify the situation, but did not hear back at the time of publication.

Patch further reported that the school posted an online report last month about soil samples from 2016 that found high levels of two carcinogens, which claim to be a result of construction and have since been removed from the grounds.

In addition to events such as Grandparents' and Special Friends' Day and calls for summer camp selections, the school does promote green and healthy tips for students and even hosts a Healthy Planet Fundraiser, according to its website. Let's hope that the situation is addressed so parents will not have to worry about their children while they're at school for the day.

School might still be in session, but it's time to start thinking about how your kids will spend their summer. Check out our list of day campssleepaway camps and performing arts camps
