The best sewing classes for kids in NYC

It's time to start sewing downtown. This crafty venue (with an equally crafty name) will help children learn the basics such as working the machines and reading particular patterns. The courses are given by handbag and accessories designer Conchi Vitale, so you know your child will receive tips and tricks from a seasoned pro. Youngsters will learn how to conquer embroidery stitches, pattern making skills and much more as they create masterpieces such as faux flowers, accessories or a new plush friend. There's a little something for everyone at Sewtime—sewing, quilting, embroidery—and kiddos 10 and up will familiarize themselves with their way around a sewing machine thanks to introductory classes. Those a little younger (8 and up) are free to get creative with a parent or guardian during Parent Child Learn to Sew. Ages 8 and up. 

Mood Fabric is a pretty prominent name within the fashion industry (perhaps you've seen it featured on a little show called Project Runway) and it's looking to make your little designer-in-training a CFDA award winner. Mood U Sewing School will help little ones learn how to make patterns, learn the sewing basics and even how to master illustrations so they can bring their designs to life. All ages. 

The owner of this Brooklyn shop founded the idea with helping children in her neighborhood explore their creativity. She originally worked out of her home before finding a spot on Bedford Ave. Little ones can come in and take afternoon or weekend sewing classes where they work on totes, skirts, pillows and so much more. Ages 6–16.

Up-and-coming fashionistas have the power to explore their creative side with a wide variety of offerings such as sewing classes, workshops (including one that teaches kiddos how to make clothes for their American Girl dolls) and even birthday parties. The Fashion Class has several locations in New York City and Long Island, so no matter where you are, you have the option to drop your kiddos (and teens) off for some fun. All ages. 

If your tots love to explore different fabrics and want to create a masterpiece, Pins & Needles gives them the perfect opportunity to take their DIY skills to new levels.
