New Yorkers know that a grilled patty and side of fries make easy—yet deliciously umami-packed—meals on the go. Top-notch burgers are in such high demand that not one but two new joints just opened in downtown Manhattan: newcomer NADC only serves Wagyu, while Westchester import Deux Luxe flips a French Onion version. But which restaurants serve the best burgers in NYC? According to a new ranking by Yelp, 25 chains top the charts across the country, including a longtime New York favorite.
To hype "International Burger Day" on May 28, the restaurant review platform announced the most popular burgers in America, including both beloved brands and emerging stars. Sitting pretty at No. 5 nationally, and (unsurprisingly) No. 1 in the Northeast, is Shake Shack. Despite falling behind longtime nemesis In-N-Out, which leads the pack in America overall, Shake Shack is the first-choice burger in more states than any other brand, claiming the top spot in 21 states as well as Washington, D.C.

Danny Meyer's first foray began as a humble hot dog cart in Madison Square Park before blossoming into an international sensation thanks to fresh ingredients, chef-driven recipes (we ranked every menu item!) and forward-thinking flair. Today, the O.G. Shack location boasts more than 5,800 reviews on Yelp, while its Theatre District locale earned a place on the site's Top 100 Burgers in America.
So what's everyone ordering? The ShackBurger doused in secret "Shack Sauce" stays in the spotlight, but crispy crinkle-cut fries and creamy frozen custards—in rotating seasonal flavors—and even the portobello “’Shroom Burger” keep guests coming back for more. Maybe the new fried pickles will help them blow away more competition next year?
We're still not sure how In-N-Out edged us out, though it could be the consistent (if not blasé) menu since 1948 and nostalgic drive-thru vibes. To qualify for the ranking, burger brands needed more than 100 locations that operate in multiple states and are primarily categorized under “burgers” on Yelp. So tell us: What's your go-to burger order?
