New York’s beaches open for the season this weekend

The unofficial start to summer in New York begins on Saturday as we enter Memorial Day weekend. (We know, it crept up fast.) For some of us, one of the best things to do during those three glorious days of freedom is hit one of the city’s nearby beaches as they officially open for swimming on May 26. As of now, the weather looks like it’s going to be warm with a high of 85 degrees. But, of course, there are thunderstorm warnings, and a 12-block stretch of Rockaway beaches are closed indefinitely.

Don’t let that put a damper on your holiday weekend though. There are a ton of awesome Memorial Day weekend events happening including various bars filled with sailors to brighten your mood. And let’s not forget that aside from this weekend, there's going to be plenty of opportunities to check out sandy shores such as Coney Island, Rockaway Beach, Fire Island and more all summer long.

Thanks to the MTA and New York’s ferry service, getting to New York’s beaches is pretty easy. But there's also shuttle bus services like the ever-popular Rockaway Beach Bus which picks up (and drops off) in the East Village, Lower East Side, Williamsburg and Bushwick. Grab your sunblock, sunnies and sandals and prepare to get sandy!
