Something new is always brewing in Singapore's café scene, and safe to say, we are stoked about this month's picks. Firstly, tell us why some of the city's best bakeries – ahem, Wheathead – just have to be located in the Wild West? We're talking about the brand new Le Matin Petit by award-winning chef Mohamed Al-Matin, who's finally made a comeback with a bakery and gelato stand in Pasir Panjang.

Closer to town, PS.Gourmet Group just launched its latest pet-friendly café, Park Side, which finds itself nestled within the lush grounds of the Botanic Gardens. Right in the heart of the CBD, a new sandwich kiosk is slated to draw queues this month, and it's none other than the popular home-based business turned pop-up concept Between Buns. Meanwhile, health junkies with a cursed sweet tooth can heave a sigh of relief with Oatsome's guilt-free treats. And finally, for some peace and quiet, book yourself a tea session at Inner Teahouse in Chinatown, which showcases a range of teas sourced directly from Fujian.

1. Le Matin Petit and Après Gelato

It has been two years since Le Matin Patisserie shut its doors in ION Orchard. But if you thought it was goodbye for good, then you’ll be pleasantly surprised. Chef Mohamed Al-Matin is making a comeback with an under-the-radar spot in the WestThe new store, named Le Matin Petit, is tucked inside Viva Vista Shopping Mall. Cosier and more pared back, it leans firmly into a takeaway-first format. Seating is scarce, so expect to camp out. Between 10am to 2pm, you’ll be met with freshly baked sourdough brioche rolls, with flavours ranging from red hot fried chicken to smoked beef cheek banh mi. All rolls can be paired with soup, salad or fries, alongside coffee, tea or kombucha. Weekends, however, will welcome back the cult classics that regulars would be familiar with – think kouign amann, pain au chocolat, pistachio escargot, fermented mushroom quiche and wagyu bone marrow pie. As the afternoon rolls in, Le Matin Petit hands the reins to Après Gelato, with small-batch churns in unique like Jerusalem artichoke, toasted rice, and pear and ginger.

2. Park Side

If your idea of slow living looks like a morning walk in the Botanic Gardens followed by brunch in a nearby café, the new Park Side by PS.Gourmet Group seems like the perfect place to do just that. Positioned right by the main entrance of the Singapore Botanic Gardens, the all-day dining spot welcomes everyone from families to furry companions. The space is styled like a cosy cottage, with plenty of shaded, alfresco seating, while the menu recreates local favourites with a Western twist. Brunch plates like the Hummingbird Pancake come with corn pancakes topped with caramelised pineapple and coconut mascarpone, while savoury dishes like the Tikka Paneer Toast keep things interesting with lashings of garam masala brown butter and mango yoghurt. The café is also open for dinner on weekends, serving mains like the tamarind hot honey chicken burger, spiced fish and chips and a range of pastas to choose from. And since the PS Group is known for their decadent desserts, it'd be amiss to skip the sundaes, with crowd-pleasing flavours like mud pie, carrot cake and Swan Lake (vanilla cake and berries).

3. Between Buns Deli

April 15 – save the date. A new sandwich deli is coming your way this month, joining the ranks of other popular sandwich joints in town like Mamma Mia Focaccia and Korio. But Between Buns is not entirely new to the scene. It started as a booming home-based business by chef Ahmir Arshad during the pandemic, which won hearts for its fried chicken sammies. Then came pop-ups with the likes of Wheathead, Maxi Coffee Bar, Two Men Bagel House, Artichoke and many others, followed by Ahmir's stint as the head chef of Wildcard, a natural wine bar and bistro in the Havelock neighbourhood. And now, after six years, the Between Buns brand has finally found a permanent home at SBF Center along Cecil Street, with bright, pastel-coded interiors and panini presses straight from Italy. Guests can expect the same DNA and classic deli staples, like tuna melts and hearty breakfast sandwiches. The store will also offer cold brew coffee, fresh bakes and pastries, as well as a selection of grain bowls for those after a quick, healthy lunch. Stay updated on the latest happenings at Between Buns Deli here.

4. Oatsome

If the snaking queues in Tanjong Pagar tell us anything, it's that Oatsome is the kind of café that Singaporeans are obsessed with these days – especially with the recent health craze following events like 2XU and Hyrox. Opened earlier this year by couple Andy Toh and Cheree Chew, this Korean-inspired store calls itself a "clean bakery and Greek yoghurt specialty café", offering guilt-free desserts and sugar-free treats that still hit the spot. On the menu: a selection of cinnamon buns, parfaits, tiramisu, Greek yoghurt bowls, overnight oats and cold brew teas. Health junkies will be pleased to know that all macros are listed, so you know exactly what you're indulging in. The crowd-favourite apple cinnamon parfait has 16 grams of protein for a full tub, and sees healthy ingredients like sugar-free chocolate, wholemeal biscuits, cinnamon crumbles and more. Other popular picks include the high-protein cookies and cream overnight oats and mochi brownies. You can also build your own Greek yoghurt bowl here, starting with a choice of Greek base, followed by two complements and one drizzle.

Opening hours: Mon, Thu & Fri noon-7pm; Sat-Sun 11am-3pm

5. Inner Teahouse

Inner Teahouse

Trade the usual clamour of a coffee shop and the loud buzz of the La Marzocco for a quiet afternoon at this contemporary tea house. Inner Teahouse is perched on the second floor of a shophouse in Chinatown, away from the buzz of the streets. If the name sounds familiar, it's because it used to share a space with pottery studio Round & Round at the artsy Pearl's Hill enclave. Now, it has its own dedicated space, decked out in dark wooden furnishings and antique pieces, with the smell of incense wafting through the room, and soft natural light that streams in through the windows. Founder Jane Cai sources all her teas from Fujian province in China, and you can try a variety of them during the signature 90-minute hosted tea experience. Sip on white tea, oolong tea and black tea, paired with a selection of snacks that rotate on a daily basis. But if you want to have full rein over your experience, go for the standard tea tasting option – simply choose your teaware, pick your tea and enjoy a relaxing 90-minute session, with gentle guidance if you so wish.

Address: 87B Keong Saik Road, Level 3F, Singapore 089170
Opening hours:
Mon-Thu 1pm-6pm; Fri-Sun noon-7pm
