This halal artisanal bakery first made waves for its delightfully unique cupcakes – think earl grey pear, bandung, mooncake and honey cornflakes, just to name a few. Now, it has expanded its menu to include savoury breads, galettes, donuts and even gelatos, among many other luscious treats. And if its whole cakes that you're looking for, Fluff Bakery has signature flavours like pandan gula melaka, strawberry liquid cheesecake milk crumbs, and Ferrero Rocher.

Dapiku Sweets

Scroll through the feed of Dapiku Sweets' Instagram account to marvel at all the gorgeous cakes made by the home-based bakery. Interestingly, Dapiku Sweets appears to enjoy two extreme types of cake decorating: the minimally-frosted naked cake, or intricately decorated vintage-style cakes. Both are equally show-stopping.

While custom-designed cakes are fun, Dapiku Sweets takes pride in its signature creations. These magically-flavoured and textured creations include the likes of Funfetti, Vanilla & Speculoos (funfetti buttermilk sponge, speculoos crunch, vanilla yogurt cream cheese, sour raspberry) alongside seasonal cookies and treats.

Kueh Lapis by Mom

Kueh Lapis by Mom is a home-based business with a story that goes back to the ‘70s. Back then, the founder’s mom sold homemade baking treats and held baking classes that were so popular, she was even featured in newspapers, magazines and on radio. Over the circuit breaker period, she began baking again to relieve some of her stress and her timeless recipes were once again enjoyed and raved about. These recipes can be savoured in the lapis cakes, made in traditional flavours like spiced Batavia, prune and cempedak to more modern twists like orange chocolate, kaffir lime and strawberry haw flakes.

Ondeh-ondeh, pengat pisang, puteri salat, badak berendam and pulut hitam. No, these aren't kuih you will find at Julie Bakes. Rather, they are some of the flavours of cake available at this shop located along the bustling Bussorah Street. Inspired by the classic kuih flavours we all know and love, Julie Bakes cakes are a true taste of tradition-meets-modern.

Take the pulut hitam cake, which features pulut hitam-flavoured sponge with actual coconut milk-infused black glutinous rice sandwiched between the layers. Meanwhile, the badak berendam has pandan-based cakes filled with grated coconut and fragrant gula melaka pieces. Both are finished with a drizzle of coconut milk for that superbly rich texture that local kuih are known for.

For non-adventurous eaters, Julie Bakes has safer options too such as peanut butter chocolate and biscoff speculoos. Cakes are available in slices and whole. By Sharifah Yusoff

Paparch

Cut through its scorched top and let the dreamy creamy molten cheesy centre escape. The basque burnt cheesecake is the ultimate indulgent cake and no one does that sweet, melty ooze better than Paparch. Paparch became extremely popular on social media over the circuit breaker period with many trying to get their hands on the coveted dessert. A cult favourite, Paparch fans attest to how devilishly delicious each cake is and how perfectly cheesy-gooey the heart is. Apart from the classic flavour, occasionally they have seasonal specials and new flavours like chocolate, mint chocolate, hojicha, caramelised banana and even durian.
