Champions from all around the world are heading to Sydney this week for Australia’s first-ever World Marathon Major. With superstar athletes Eliud Kipchoge and Sifan Hassan joining the Sydney Marathon line-up on Sunday, August 31, every record is at risk of being broken. Whether you love running or not, this sporting event is bound to go down in history – and you won’t want to miss it. Here’s how to catch all the action, in person or online.

When is the Sydney Marathon?

The Sydney Marathon will take place on Sunday, August 31, 2025. 

What time does Sydney Marathon start?

The Sydney Marathon kicks off with the wheelchair athletes at 6.15am AEST, followed by the elite runners from 6.30am.

How long is the Sydney Marathon?

The 42.195-kilometre route starts on Miller Street in North Sydney. From there, participants will charge across the iconic Harbour Bridge, past 33 entertainment zones and four live spectator sites – including The Rocks, Martin Place, Taylor Square and Moore Park – before finishing at the Sydney Opera House.

How many people in the Sydney Marathon?

A whopping 35,000 runners from 156 countries will participate in the 2025 Sydney Marathon. This is a huge jump from the 5,300 registrations in 2022 and 25,000 finishers in 2024.

What are the best places to watch the Sydney Marathon?

You can cheer on your mates and spot the elite runners at four live spectator sites, including:

  • Transurban Rock Zone, Crn George and Alfred St, The Rocks (11.9km) – first runner 7.05am
  • Spirit of Sydney Zone, Martin Place (13.1km) – first runner 7.08am
  • Running with Pride, Taylor Square South, Cnr Oxford and Flinders St, Darlinghurst (15.4km and 36.2km) – first runner 7.15am, then again at 8.17am
  • Sydney Swans HQ, Driver Ave, Moore Park (29.4km and 34.4km) – first runner at 7.57am

If you’re after multiple viewing opportunities, cheer at the start line (6:15am-8:15am), see runners pass at Barangaroo (6:36am-9:55am), and catch them again at Martin Place (6:42am-10:25am) before meeting them at the end in the Royal Botanic Gardens. Find out more about the spectator zones here.

How to watch Sydney Marathon online in Australia?

The Sydney Marathon will be broadcast live on Sunday, August 31 from 6am to 10am AEST. You can tune in for free on 7mate and 7plus Sport, with highlights and replays available to stream on 7plus Sport.

Who will win Sydney Marathon 2025?

In the men’s race, all eyes will be on Kenya’s Eliud Kipchoge, the only human on Earth to run a marathon in less than two hours and an 11-time World Marathon Major champion. Joining him on the start line are strong Aussie contenders, including former national record holder Brett Robinson and Olympian Liam Adams.

In 2025, Dutch Olympic champion Sifan Hassan – with a current personal best of 2:13:44 – is chasing the highly beatable women’s record (2:21:41), with defending champ Workenesh Edesa Gurmesa also returning to the track. South Australian Olympian Jess Stenson is also in top shape for a big run after achieving a personal best of 2:22:56 at the 2025 Tokyo Marathon.

The Sydney Marathon Elite Wheelchair race will also host the strongest wheelchair field Australia has ever seen. Swiss Paralympic athletes Marcel Hug and Manuela Schär are front-runners to break the existing wheelchair records – 1:38:35 for the men and 1:54:09 for the women.

Who won the Sydney Marathon 2024?

Last year, both the male and female course records were broken by Kenya’s Brimin Kipkorir Misoi (2:06:18) and Ethiopia’s Workenesh Edesa Gurmes (2:21:41). 

How to enter the Sydney Marathon 2026?

In 2025, more than 80,000 people from around the world entered Australia’s first World Marathon Major. Entries for the 2026 Sydney marathon haven’t opened yet, but we expect the general ballot to open in December.
