Western Sydney International Airport (WSI) is inching closer to take-off, with the first Sydney Metro – Western Sydney Airport Line train having just arrived in Sydney from Europe. Unlike Sydney’s existing metro trains, this new fleet has been designed with airport travellers in mind. The biggest difference? Space. The carriages are 30 centimetres wider, creating wider aisles so passengers can wheel suitcases, carry backpacks and move through the train with ease. There’s also dedicated luggage storage beneath seats, flexible spaces for bags, bikes and prams, plus wider platforms and station gates to make the airport journey smoother from start to finish.
Passengers will also be able to check live flight information on digital screens with updates linked directly to WSI Airport once the line opens. The 23-kilometre, six-station metro line will connect communities across Western Sydney with the new airport precinct, which is already taking shape with the recent opening of its cargo hub.
The Sydney Metro – Western Sydney Airport Line will feature a mix of tunnel, viaduct and surface-level track. Inside the trains, passengers will find a combination of familiar longitudinal seating along the sides of the carriages, plus front and rear-facing seats. The first train is currently housed in a maintenance facility at Orchard Hills near Penrith and is due to begin dynamic testing on a section of the line. Once services commence, 12 airport trains will run every hour, carrying up to 7,800 passengers in these four-carriage trains.
While the first commercial passenger flight from WSI Airport is scheduled for October 25, the Sydney Metro – Western Sydney Airport Line is not expected to open until late 2027. An airport needs more than runways to thrive – roads, hotels, bus services and reliable public transport connections will all play a crucial role in transforming WSI Airport into a major Western Sydney hub. All eyes are now on the airport-ready Metro train to ensure that everything is on track.
