A smash hit that ran in London’s West End for 12 years, and won a clutch of awards when it debuted in Australia in 2004, We Will Rock You is the exhilarating musical based on the greatest hits of one of the UK’s greatest bands, Queen.

Originally conceived in the 1990s as a staged biography of lead singer Freddie Mercury, the project spun off down a different path when comedian and novelist Ben Elton (Blackadder, Stark) came on board, envisaging a futuristic scenario and a heroic struggle as the perfect medium for the band’s songs of longing, triumph and transcendence.

Now a refreshed version of We Will Rock You is playing at The Lyric at The Star and it’s almost guaranteed to blow away the winter blues with a burst of glamour and electric guitar feedback.

Garth Keegan (Jersey Boys) stars as Galileo, who inhabits the conformist iPlanet where music is computer generated and rock’n’roll is no more than a myth. Teaming with the feisty Scaramouche (Erin Clare) he joins the rebel Bohemians to take on the all-powerful Globalsoft Corporation ruled by Killer Queen (Casey Donovan).

It’s all an energetic excuse to rattle through those unforgettable hits: ‘Another One Bites the Dust’, ‘Radio Gaga’, ‘A Kind of Magic’, ‘Under Pressure’, ‘We Are the Champions’, ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ and many, many more. Costumes and sets are impressive, the light show is dazzling, the house band is kick-arse, and the cast also includes Brian Mannix, lead singer of 1980s Australian band the Uncanny X-Men.

We Will Rock You is now playing and will continue until June 26. All ticket holders are entitled to a 15 per cent discount at Harvest Buffet, an all-you-can eat buffet at The Star featuring top seafood, roasts, soups, Italian, Indian and Chinese food as well as a tempting range of desserts and cheeses.

The Star is located at 80 Pyrmont St, Pyrmont. For general enquiries phone 02 9777 9000. Find out more about The Star’s winter attractions.
