If you told a person from the Middle Ages that in the year 2024 there would be devices capable of speaking to anyone from around the world, could navigate you anywhere you want to go and also tell you that your childhood crush now has a wife and kids – there’s a good chance that person would spontaneously combust. Thankfully though, we aren’t yet capable of time travel. Although at this point, it’s not a totally rogue concept. The future is here and we are living in it.

In fact, there are so many things that you can do in Sydney right now that will make you feel like you’re living in the movies Gattaca and  2001: A Space Odyssey, or even the TV show The Jetsons. Get ready to dive in and explore.

If the idea of living through a zombie apocalypse sounds terrifying, we don’t blame you. However, those with a penchant for danger can experience zombies, aliens and killer robots all without the threat of being seriously injured. Phew! At Zero Latency in Alexandria, roam virtual worlds freely in a 200-square-metre arena with some of your best mates. No cords necessary, all you need is a headset and your body as the controller.

We may not have flying cars yet, and even if we did it’d be a logistical nightmare – however, vehicle manufacturers certainly have the future in mind when it comes to luxury cars. Gone are the days of almost breaking your arm trying to wind down car windows, or fiddling for yonks with the radio dial to find some decent music. Now, the voice-activated technology once reserved for the fictional show Knight Rider is very real and quite normal.

Aside from the obvious perks of modern-day car technology, car designs have also come leaps and bounds. In 2023, leading luxury car manufacturer Genesis unveiled its concept convertible car, winning the 2023 Car Design Award 'Concept Car Of The Year'. The Genesis X Convertible Concept maintains that classic car feeling, while also appearing otherworldly and beyond our time with its iconic power lines in the car's front and rear lights.

The Genesis X Convertible Concept is only being displayed across Australia as a one-off, so it's worth making some time to check it out at the Genesis Studio Sydney right now. Read more about it here.

Bar 86 is the type of cocktail lounge you’d see in a 1960s imagining of the future. It’s retrofuturism on steroids. Picture red and white bucket chairs inspired by Finnish designer Eero Aarnio, golden orb-like light fixtures and red velour armchairs. What makes this bar even more spectacular is the 360-degree panorama views of Sydney’s CBD. It’s giving a level of luxury you would expect from those living in the year 3000.

Recently, Luna Park unveiled the Dream Circus – an immersive experience contained within a high-tech theatre-like set, otherwise known as the ‘Magic Box’. It’s part 3D movie, part holographic musical – like an AI-led concert in the future.

The space has motion-activated LEDs and hologram technology that works in with the textured walls and stages, making the action literally pop out from the walls. Bonus points for a ride that entertains, while keeping your feet firmly on the ground. If this is what rides of the future look like, sign us up.
