As many industries move towards scraping plastic bags, foregoing plastic straws and focusing on waste minimisation, a guide to your local green and ethically clean stores and services would come in handy.
The Youth Food Movement (YFM) – a volunteer-led organisation educating young people about sustainable food production and consumption – has created just that with Pocket Power. It’s a tried and tested Sydney area guide to all your sustainable food services like grocery stores, pubs, cafés and restaurants.
On August 24, YFM is launching this map at a night of ecological education. There’ll be waste-free cooking demonstrations, talks about composting techniques and other ways to implement the three R’s – reduce, reuse, recycle – and interactive games and workshops. There’s a healthy wrap included in the ticket price, as well as local craft beer from Wayward Brewing Co, Batch Brewing Company, the Apple Thief and Yulli’s Brews. Plus, you’ll take home a jar full of knowledge about preserving and pickling from the Cornersmith’s Maddy Dobbins.
The three-hour event is part of a nationwide series YFM are running to encourage communities to support local sustainable business champions.
