When push comes to shove, only one thing really matters about an airport: how many places it gives you access to. It might be helpful to know how many coffee shops it has, or how quick security queues are, but ultimately none of that matters if you can’t get where you need to go. Luckily, the world’s best connected airport is right here in the UK, according to the latest research from aviation stats company OAG.
OAG’s Megahubs 2025 report just revealed that London Heathrow is the most connected airport in the world. The annual study looks at 100 of the planet’s biggest airports and ranks them based on the total number of scheduled seats over a 12 month period. This includes inbound, outbound, and connecting flights, and the goal is to provide ‘essential insights on how flight connectivity changes, develops and grows across the world’s largest airports’.
The list has changed a lot in the last year, with Heathrow being the only terminal in the top 10 to retain its spot. In fact, Heathrow was also top dog when the ranking began a decade ago, although it did slip for a few years before reclaiming the gold in 2023. An OAG analyst explained that the airport’s ‘sustained dominance reflects its vital role in global travel’.
On its busiest day between September 2024 and August 2025, 59,240 passengers made connections at Heathrow. It also offered travellers an impressive 226 destinations across 80 countries to choose from. LHR’s connections have gone down by a third since the study launched in 2015, but the total destinations offered have risen by nearly 25 percent.
Heathrow was the only UK airport to make it into the top 10, but three other European hubs did. Amsterdam Schiphol came third, Frankfurt came joint fourth, and Paris Charles de Gaulle narrowly made it to 10th place.
A representative for Heathrow said that the airport is ‘proud to celebrate three consecutive years’ topping the ranking, adding that ‘with our future plans for expansion, we will be able to offer even more opportunities to discover new destinations, trade with more markets and connect with the world through Heathrow’.
