Why is London going to experience a heatwave?
The Met Office says that heatwaves happen when slow-moving high pressure develops above an area, trapping warm air and pushing temperatures above what is average for the season and the area.
Forecasters have said that a jet stream is arriving above the UK from the Caribbean at the end of this week, which will cause high pressure and a rise in temperature.
When is London going to experience the heatwave?
We’ll get a short hot spell from Friday, May 30 and Saturday, May 31.
Looking a little further ahead, BBC Weather predicts that there will be another mini-heatwave from June 7-9.
How hot will it get?
The average temp for London in May is around 19 degrees celsius and for June is 22 degrees, but according to the Met Office, the city will bask in temperatures up to 25 degrees on Friday and Saturday.
Friday May 30
The Met currently reckons Friday will peak at 24C, with high UV and pollen levels.
Saturday May 31
Saturday is looking like the hottest day of the weekend, with highs of 25C – also with substantial levels of UV and pollen.
Sunday 1st June
By Sunday the brief period of heat will be mostly over. The second day of the weekend will see temperatures peak at 20C.
