London is stuffed with food markets. From the historic Borough Market (which dates back to the thirteenth century) and Old Spitalfields, to the newer Seven Dials and the ever-so-trendy Broadway Market, there’s a street food stall to satisfy every possible craving in this city. But who says there’s not room for even more, eh?
At the end of this year, a brand new indoor food hall will take over a five-storey building on Leicester Square, right next to the Odeon cinema. It’s by food hall chain Market Place and promises to be one of the ‘largest and most ambitious food hall experiences the UK has ever seen’. A bold claim.
Officially opening this December, it’ll be occupied by 16 different food vendors. We don’t know who they’ll be yet, but we do know that they’ll be repping cuisines from across the globe.
Beyond the all-important street food stalls, the new market will have three bars, a balcony, a private dining room and a dedicated events rooms with a huge screen showing major sports games and cultural moments. Like Market Place’s other venues, you can also expect regular comedy nights, live music and DJ sets.

Market Place opened its first food hall on Peckham’s Rye Lane just over two years ago. After that, it launched more markets in Vauxhall and Harrow, with another opening in St Paul’s with nine food traders earlier this year. Vendors there include Freewheelin Pizza, the Duck Shed and Tikka Nation.
Blake Henderson, managing director at Market Place Food Halls, said: ‘We started Market Place with one neighbourhood site in Peckham and in a few short years it has grown across the city. Leicester Square is the biggest leap forward yet. It is one of the most famous squares in the world and we are proud to bring our biggest Market Place yet right to the heart of the West End.
‘This flagship is everything Market Place stands for. Incredible food, great drinks, live entertainment and a space where Londoners and visitors can celebrate together.’
20–21 Leicester Square, WC2H 7JX. Opens December.
