How to start your Mediterranean holiday at Oxford Circus

The gorgeous beach, the amazing bar, the romantic hilltop restaurant… We all want to be there RIGHT NOW, don’t we? Let’s make that happen. Here are our top tips for an escape so speedy you can start holidaying as soon as you’ve quit your desk

By Time Out editors

1. Be a slick subterranean surfer

Forget booking a cab – unless you’ve discovered one with magic powers to jump traffic queues and pass through red lights undetected. From Oxford Circus, the Central Line will get you to Liverpool Street (a nifty 15 minutes) and the Victoria Line gets you to Tottenham Hale (a snippy 17 minutes). From both of these stations, you can hop on Stansted Express. Even better, there are Euro cash machines at Oxford Circus station so you can get your spends sorted, too.

2. Get the train to the plane

Stansted Express takes you from Zone 1 to Stansted Airport in 47 minutes. With free onboard wifi, you’ve got just enough time to get yourself perfectly prepped for your trip while everyone else is still triple-checking they packed their passports.

3. Sort your in-flight playlist

Want cool sounds for hot weekends? How about classic house from Robert Miles, Paul Van Dyk and Pete Tong for Ibiza? Archie Shepp, Diego el Cigala and a bit of classic Django Reinhardt for Nice? Roosevelt, Todd Terje and 80’s electro classics for Berlin? Do your thing. We trust your taste.

4. A word in your ear…

Search for the inside track on where you’re going. Look for the critics’ choice picks written by our local editors and the comment boxes (just like you, our readers far and wide are a passionate bunch). We’ll steer you clear of the tourist traps. These are three of our favourites right now: the ‘bathtub’ art gallery extension at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, the free (free!) guided tours at CERN in Geneva, ‘60 Years of Eurovision’ at Pop House in Stockholm.

5. And… relax

It’s two minutes’ walk from the Stansted Express platform to the airport terminal so now you’ve got yourself sorted, why not sit back and get yourself properly in the holiday mood with a few YouTube favourites? Watch Mark Wiens eat his way around the world on ‘Migrationology’. Would YOU eat THAT? Or how about funky people jumping off things in beautiful places? Around a Vision’ taking parkour on tour is simply stunning. For inspiration, check out ‘Great Big Story’ – telling planet Earth’s small tales with an epic heart.

Before you know it, you’ll be ready for take off.
