Mediterranean style and substance in South Melbourne
A little slice of the Left Bank in South Melbourne, Bellota will win you over with its intrepid wine list, salty snacks and sass-packed service. The blackboard wine list is crammed with hyper-local Victorians and unusual imports, democratically available by the taste, glass or carafe. Nothing take your fancy there? Slip next door to the Prince Wine Store, where you can snap up a bottle from the global assembly, then whack on a neat $15 corkage to drink it at Bellota (waived for wines over $80).
A whole bottle isn’t such a bad proposition when you consider the smart Mediterranean fare on offer. There’s a glistening oyster display, cheese platters, and a shiny charcuterie cabinet where ruby-hued jamon is sliced to order. Before you know it, your tiny marble table will be crowded with croquetas, Spanish tortilla and wild-boar ragù... and perhaps another bottle of that knockout wine.
