The Prince keeps the dream alive for the rockers of St Kilda
The Prince of Wales Hotel is a Frankenstein’s monster of a pub. Within its walls are a swanky nightclub, a boutique hotel, a casual Mexican eatery, a five-star restaurant, a huge band room and a old-school public bar, but by their powers combined manage to make one of the most successful and interesting iterations of “pub” in town.
The public bar is a classic dive-pub with pool tables, diner-style booths, and one old bloke helping to collect glasses for a pot or two of super cheap and totally drinkable house draught. It’s known for a longstanding gay-friendly culture and easy-going vibe. There’s live rockabilly on Sundays and various acts Friday, all free, plus DJs for the Saturday night crowd.
Upstairs, the Prince Band Room provides one of the last spots in this part of town for local, national and international acts to do their thing, and in a part of town where most people would rather be clubbing, we’re glad the Prince is keeping it real.
