Behind an unassuming façade on Victoria street in North Melbourne lies Prudence: a cosy little nook that looks like it could be the lounge room of someone named Prudence. Comfy booths, heavy curtains, an open fire place, kitsch lamps and an impressive chandelier make up the bottom floor. There's also seating upstairs, though it's a bit shy of atmosphere up there unless you've got a good group. A chess board helps to keep things interesting. There's also a good sized beer garden out the back, with plenty of seating. It’s perfect for sipping on a Sailor Jerry’s on a balmy night, while there are outdoor heaters to keep you feeling toasty during winter.
The well-stocked bar and robust cocktail list are what really make this bar. $10 Moscow mules, $12.50 amaretto sours and flaming absinthe creations are among the highlights, though the dim lighting and soulful sounds of Tom Waits inspire a craving for whiskey, served neat. There’s also a long wine list, a decent range of tap beers and a coffee or hot chocolate option. If you’re feeling peckish, nuts and cheese platters are available, but we suggest ordering some share dishes from the African restaurant down the street. They’ll deliver it right to your table and serve it to you fresh.
