A giant fire organ leads a hot White Night line-up for 2017

That's right, folks: an immense, hand-operated organ built from salvaged industrial metal. The unearthly music that bellows from its pipes is powered by jets of flame, and is operated by more than 20 musicians, performance artists and fire-breathers. Add industrial drums, horns and bells and you've got something that wouldn't be out of place in Mad Max: Fury Road.

We're ridiculously excited, and a little bit terrified. Hubbub Music's Pyrophone Juggernaut (which will appear in the Melbourne Museum Plaza) is just one of the many installations, projection pieces and performances that have just been announced for White Night 2017, to be held on Saturday February 18 from dusk 'til dawn.

And the all-night art party has plenty more to offer than just a demonic musical instrument. Over at Birrarung Marr, Spherophyte (by Alex Sanson, below) will unfurl in a blossom-like interplay of light and sculpture.

And then there's The Medusa (below); an ethereal light piece by John Fish that will see a jellyfish (of the hydro medusae variety, no less) rise from the water and float through laneways, singing a haunting song as she flies.

And don't think we've forgotten about you, Ballarat. This time, White Night will expand into regional Victoria with White Night Ballarat (Saturday March 4). Here, the historic streets will come to life with works like Wadawurrung Walking with Waa (below); a guided walk through Ballarat where the paintings of Aunty Marlene and her daughter Deanne Gilson will be projected onto walls, connecting the people of Ballarat to the town's Aboriginal history and culture.
