In case you didn't know, Melbourne's tram network is the biggest in the world. And soon it will be completely powered by solar power. A solar power plant is being built in Victoria's regional north-west – the first large-scale plant in the state – that will power Melbourne's tram network. The plant is expected to be completed by the end of 2018, and this investment in renewable energy by the state government will create 300 new jobs and deliver $150 million in new capital investment.

The state government announcement by Energy, Environment and Climate Change Minister Lily D'Ambrosio today also mentions that the solar plant is set to produce 75 megawatts of power, and that 35 megawatts of it "will be sufficient to cover the energy needs of the 410 trams that run on Melbourne's network."
