One literal dollar.

That's how much it will cost you to get a ticket to tomorrow night's performance of Opera Australia's La Bohème at Arts Centre Melbourne. For the price of one quarter of your morning coffee, you could spend your evening basking in the glory of Puccini's magnificent romantic tragedy, starring international opera stars Lianna Haroutounian and Gianluca Terranova.

Given that tickets to this show start at around $65 and go all the way up to $265, that's a pretty extreme discount. Why is this happening, you ask? It's a celebration of this particular production's 100th performance, which premiered in Melbourne in 2011 under director Gale Edwards. From 10am tomorrow (Wednesday May 25), the Arts Centre Melbourne box office will be selling 100 tickets for 100 cents each. Cash only, maximum two per person. First in, best dressed.

If you've never been to the opera, then La Bohème is the perfect place to get acquainted. Puccini's sublime melodies and the captivating plot are familiar to most people (especially if you're a fan of Rent, which was based on this opera). Edwards' production – which is set in the wild cabaret halls of Weimar Berlin – has been lauded as one of Opera Australia's finest ever.

See you tomorrow at 10am, then?
