Supersmall at Good Things
Time Out says
A little club getting a reputation for big nostalgia nights
“There’s an oversaturation of sameness in the nightclub scene; everyone is playing a variation of the same kind of house music. We wanted to throw the kind of parties that we would love to go to.”
This is Liz Eckel, manager of Supersmall – a club night that found a permanent weekly home at Good Things in South Yarra back in March this year. Her vision for Supersmall was simple: to throw a party where punters could “sing along to their favourite party jams in a non-threatening environment. It’s like the best house party you’ve ever been to – not pretentious or judgemental, just 100 per cent fun.”
Which party jams, exactly? The club has built its name on its themed nostalgia parties, ranging from a Kardashian night to an early 2000s indie-soaked OC party. “When we did a vintage Britney party back in August, we had a couple arrive dressed in head to toe denim, [channelling] Britney and JT circa 2001,” says Eckel. “We knew we were on to a good thing!”
When the Supersmall crew commit to a theme, they don’t mess around. At the OC party, life-size cut-outs covered the walls, punters carried Ryan and Marissa face-masks and California played on the hour, every hour while scenes from the show were projected onto the walls (the feels!).
Next month, gear up for Drake’s 30th (Sat Oct 22)and a Stranger Things-themed Halloween party (Sun Oct 30). This Saturday (September 24) is dedicated to one of the most universally loved actors of all time. Bill Murray's Birthday Party will celebrate the loveable oddball with music and clips from some of the actor's greatest films, form Ghostbusters to Groundhog Day. Entry is free, and there'll even be life-size cutouts of the man himself!
