If you're sick of confining your artistic talents to the canvas, listen up. Artist Kerrie Poliness, along with ACCA and outdoor exhibition Uptown, is inviting Melburnians to take part in a new, large-scale participatory artwork on the steps of Victoria's Parliament House.
On Saturday, February 6, Poliness will be chalking a giant geometric artwork called 'Parliament Steps Walking Drawing' onto the stairs of Parliament between midday and 3pm – and if you're so inclined, you can join her. All are welcome to take part in the work, which is part of Poliness's Generation Mess series. The series features large, colourful geometric drawings exploring the networks and relationships between people and the world. Notably however, they are all created in public, by the public.
The imposing stairs at Parliament House were chosen for their classical architecture and institutional status. We would also like to add that the stairs are just generally very photogenic, as every bride in Melbourne knows. For the work, Poliness has created a design that will appear to expand and contract as it moves along the steps.
