Fancy kicking back in your own W-class tram? You’ve got until Friday July 6 to toss your hat into the ring. Victoria is retiring more than 200 trams (including the swish W-class), with 134 slated to be given away to the public for free.

Expressions of interest are open until July 6, with anyone interested in acquiring their own slice of Melburnian vehicular history welcome to apply via the VicTrack website. Applications from community groups and educational institutions are strongly encouraged with previously retired trams going on to new lives as cafés, classrooms and even as an airbnb.

To score your own light-rail wonder you’ll need to explain how you’ll restore the tram, use it, and maintain it for future generations to enjoy. Expressions of interest will be judged by an independent panel who will preference applications based on whether the tram will remain publicly accessible and to the benefit of the community.

To submit your application head to the VicTrack website.
