Pat Breen and Lydia Wegner of Shop Ramen are no strangers to sweet treats, as their fresh-baked dessert pies are strange yet tasty bedfellows to their ramen. They’ve taken over a former chip shop on Gertrude Street and they haven’t done anything fancy with it, apart from hoisting up a new neon sign. It really is all about the doughnuts.
The first thing you'll notice about the doughnuts is how big they are compared to other doughies in town (not that size is any indication of quality). But try one of the cinnamon sugar numbers and you'll find that the doughnuts are soft and light (note the air pockets in each bite) and the cinnamon distribution even (very important). Moving on to the glazed and filled doughnuts, you'll find interesting flavour combos like the Pina Colada Brûlée with grilled pineapple and maraschino cherry, the Skittle-like Blueberry and Lime, and the Coffee Hazelnut Crunch.
They also love their matcha here at Donut Shop. There's a matcha-filled donut with white chocolate glaze, and they serve a mean matcha latte if the Small Batch Roasting Co filtered coffee isn't your thing. A Shop Ramen import, the matcha and apple soda combo will no doubt be refreshing on warmer days. A vegan doughnut is also available.
