Stock up on excellent coffee and baked goods at this St Kilda café/bakery

The love affair between Il Fornaio and star pastry chef Philippa Sibley burned hot and bright, but sadly Sibley has left the building. Don’t let that stop you, though. There’s plenty to like – nay love – at this casual café that looks like a cross between a bakehouse and a factory.

You’ll find Il Fornaio (Italian for ‘the baker’) sandwiched between Lau’s Family Kitchen (Gilbert Lau’s casual Cantonese diner) and Acland St Cantina.

Big changes have been afoot of late. The cafe is now open for dinner. You can hit up the bakehouse for house-made breads and pizze and, hello! They're making cheese! Yep, ricotta and taleggio is being made on premises, and you can get yourself into all manner of sleep trouble with a late night flight of fromage.

Everything here is done with care and there’s no better place on the block to nurse a mid-morning hangover.

This venue welcomes American Express
