We tried Zuum, the Melbourne brand crushing tiredness with gum

The Time Out team acted as guinea pigs to see if this energy gum lives up to the hype

Picture this: three best mates from Melbourne are stuck in hotel quarantine, drinking lukewarm instant coffee before an iso workout. They thought “surely there’s a better way to get energised than this?” and two years later, there is.

Zuum Energy Gum is mint flavoured, sugar-free and packed with caffeine, guarana and B vitamins. Two pieces deliver the same energy as a cup of coffee or energy drink.

Founders Hugo Gray, Alex Chambers and Eamon Roderick created Zuum for any time you need a clean boost, from Monday morning frantics to Saturday night antics. Since launching, Zuum has become a popular cure for the afternoon slump in offices around Australia and has since attracted attention in the nightlife scene after being spotted in the hands of some of Melbourne’s most prominent influencers.

The Zuum crew have amassed an impressive line-up of ambassadors from AFL players and Olympians to Socceroos and lifestyle influencers. Even former minister for Foreign Affairs, Julie Bishop is hooked. With a list like that, we were curious to see whether Zuum is worth the hype. Here are a few takeaways from our team…

Ashleigh, branded content writer

Ashleigh saved her gum for the weekend and had two pieces before heading to a Carly Rae Jespsen gig. She started feeling a buzz from the gum after just a few minutes and it tasted minty fresh. Maybe it was just the rush of hearing ‘Call Me Maybe’ live, but she definitely felt extra energised all night.

“Carly was playing a late set at Forum Melbourne on a Monday evening, but two pieces of Zuum really got me through the night,” says Ashleigh.

“The gum had an icy cold mint flavour that woke me up on its own. As for the energising effect, it felt like a strong cup of coffee, but it came on more quickly and without the fuss.”

Mary, account manager

Mary first thought the single piece of Zuum she consumed wasn’t enough to combat the afternoon office lull, but she soon kicked into gear and couldn’t stop chatting. After an hour, she wanted more.

“I couldn’t stop talking to everyone in the office”, says Mary. “I was feeling like I could have taken a nap, but after the Zuum I was very hyper!”

Verdict: There’s no doubt that Zuum does work. For anyone that enjoys having something to chew rather than a whole coffee or a sugary energy drink, it should hit the spot – and you don’t have to keep it in the fridge or wait for a barista to make it.

Zuum Energy Gum is available nationally at Chemist Warehouse, and you can keep your eyes peeled for new flavours and stockists coming later this year.
