At this Northcote wool emporium, knitting is far more than a way to pass the time. It’s a valuable skill, it’s an art form and it’s a shared experience. For this reason, owner Sharon Kellock runs regular classes, which range from beginner level to more advanced colour work and lace sessions, as well as a weekly Sit ‘n’ Knit social knitting club (Sun 2-4pm). Inside the store, you’ll find yarn and patterns from brands including Blue Sky Alpacas, Debbie Bliss, Jo Sharp and Rowan.

I brought my 74 year old mum in to Woolarium today. She has dementia and used to be a passionate and amazing knitter. I was hoping to find a knitting project for her to help lift her spirits, and approached the elderly saleswoman in Woolarium beforehand and gave her a heads up on the situation. I was therefore appalled and dismayed that the saleswoman proceeded to make my mum feel stupid and incompetent through her demeaning and repeated questioning about my mum's past experience using a circular needle. I ended up buying the wool to avoid making a scene in front of my mum and young son, but will never go back.
