There’s something about the witching hours of the night, before the sun rises, that life exists in an altered state. Monsters seem realer, inhibitions fade and quiet impulses grow louder. The human experience becomes rawer than it already was in the daylight.

That’s the modus operandi and driving force behind theatre-maker Roslyn Oades and ARIA Award-winning sound designer Bob Scott’s new immersive listening experience The Nightline.

From August 13 to 29, audiences are invited to pick up the phone and tune into a euphony of anonymous Melburnians sharing their stories in a series of late-night messages recorded in the wee hours of the morning from midnight until 6am.

Guests are invited into one of Malthouse Theatre’s secret rooms, usually closed to the public, where a concierge ushers them to a table featuring a phone and a switchboard.

The immersive sound experience taps into the vulnerabilities of its subjects through a powerful medium designed to bring us closer together. With all subjects remaining completely anonymous, the intimate recordings feature voice notes that range from humorous anecdotes to deeply personal tales of a life lived.

As the night goes on the voice notes start to trickle into the room with the experience beginning to feel very Lynchian in nature. The confessionals take over and the anonymous voices crackle in stylised harmony to create a bold and powerful in-room effect.

This production is a peek behind the curtain of the secret lives of others – it’s performance art at its most intimate.
