Time Out says

You can do a free tour of Melbourne’s majestic Government House this weekend

You’ve probably seen the Government House’s belvedere tower poking out from above the trees in Kings Domain. But have you ever stepped inside?

This Sunday, January 26, Government House is hosting its annual Open Day. It’s free admission and you’ll be able to head out on a self-guided tour of the State Apartments, historic stables and mews plus 11 hectares of gardens. There will also be free activities for kids and live entertainment, plus you’re invited to BYO picnic to enjoy on the lawn. Otherwise, there will be a range of food vendors set up on the day.

Government House was opened way back in 1876 and it was designed in a 19th-century Italianate style. It used to be the official residence of the governor-general of Australia, but these days it’s open for garden tours and National Trust tours.

Gates will open at 10.30am and close at 4.30pm. Self-guided tours will run between 11am and 4pm.
