Mini guide: How to eat around Maidstone like a local

Keen to explore this corner of Melbourne? Let your stomach guide you in this pocket of the west

Bordered by Braybrook, West Footscray, and within spitting distance of Highpoint Shopping Centre, Maidstone often gets overlooked by its more flashy western cousins. The suburb is on the up and up though – with many looking to move into this river-adjacent corner of the west.

But let’s think about food for a second – have you explored the best that Maidstone has to offer, yet? Here are our five favourite places to eat, now that restrictions are lifted.

Please check with the venue directly for open times and up-to-date menu options.

Jack B Nimble

Great local cafés often have a combo of three things: excellent coffee, a killer menu, and an unpretentiousness that gets you coming back time and time again. Jack B Nimble has all three, and even though it’s situated in the middle of western suburbia, it’s serving up some delicious burgers, house-made pies and breakfast classics.

One for the Crow

One for the vegans and vegetarians of the west, One for the Crow is co-owned by horticulturist Stephanie Brodel who opened the café with her husband Taze in 2018. Naturally, with a horticulturist on hand, the café not only dishes up a plant-based menu that spans sandwiches, seasonal breakfast classics, sweets and more, but there are also plants to purchase post-meal.

Marciano’s Cakes

South American bakery Marciano’s Cakes still draws a crowd after all these years – and for good reason. The store offers a huge range of specialty cakes, as well as savouries for any kind of occasion, whether it’s a wedding, a birthday or an engagement party. Naturally, for a South American bakery, you shouldn’t pass up the traditional empanadas and Spanish-style bread that’s baked in house daily.

Souv Baby

Previously trading as On The Bone, Souv Baby rose from the ashes at the end of second lockdown. From the name, we can assume the venture is going to be delivering similar Greek-inspired charred meat to the people of the west. The new restaurant is open for dine-in service currently and there’s still the option to take your food (and a complimentary picnic blanket) and enjoy it in the small park opposite the venue on Mitchell Street.

Mr Spriggins Café

Located near Funtopia Maribyrnong, behind Bunnings, Mr Spriggins serves all-day breakfast and crowd-favourite lunch options to the people of Maidstone. The menu boasts breakfast burritos, pizzas and a range of burgers with thick-cut chips. The kids' menu is particularly noteworthy though, so there’s surely something for everyone – even the pickiest of eaters.
